Long before the Ho! Ho! Ho! of Santa filled the streets at Sunday’s parade, there was a choir of huffs and puffs along the same route, as more than 2000 runners participated in the annual Holly Jolly Run. Three of our planners from Montage, Alicia Hemingway, Patrick Lennard-White and Christian Kingsmill, along with our friend and colleague Tracy Parnell, joined forces with Team Triumph for the 5k run.
Team Triumph runners tag team with each other to navigate ‘Wish kids’ in wheelchairs as they weave their way through the downtown streets to the FINISH line. Our team was led by team captain Zosia, whose shouts of encouragement from her own ‘Chariot of Fire’ drowned out the cheers from the crowd. “Just because I have a disability, doesn’t mean I can’t do this!” “Come on guys!” ”We’re a team!” “Respect everyone!” “You can do anything you want so never give up!”
These words from a girl, who at her most vulnerable moment as a patient at SickKids, had almost lost her ability to speak. Her mother shared that part of her daughter’s story with us. On the other hand, Zosia was more interested in telling us about her YouTube channel, and was thrilled that she would get five more followers!
Zosia is a true inspiration, and her words will echo within us as a message of hope, through and beyond the holidays.
